The Element FAQs
What is The Element?
The Element is the Riv ministry for ninth through twelfth grade students. It's a place where students can come and learn about being a Christ-follower in an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. At The Element, students will have fun playing crazy games, be challenged with an engaging teaching, and be encouraged to share their lives with their peers and leaders in Life Groups.
When does The Element meet?
Element meetings happen in two parts. The Element meeting take place on Sundays from 6:00ish-7:00ish pm in the Chapel at Riv's Holt Venue. Afterwards, from 7:30ish - 8:30ish pm, students and leaders get together in Life Groups. The Element also has Blend events, which are monthly events that take place at various times throughout the month.
What happens at a weekly meeting of The Element?
There are many facets to an Element meeting that make our times fun and exciting. First, students and leaders have time to eat and hang out together. After that, students engage in worship and hear an engaging teaching rooted in Scripture that is applicable to the challenges they face in today’s culture. After the teaching, students break out into Life Groups led by adult leaders (We encourage students to be in Life Groups when they are ready, so students do not have to stay for the Life Group time). They have a chance to share how they feel about what they heard and ask questions about how it affects their lives. In Life Groups, students can be honest and real without having to worry about being judged.
What is an Element Blend?
An Element Blend is an event that happens once a month outside the weekly Sunday meetings. These events provide a fun, high energy environment in which students can let loose and have a great time with their friends and leaders. Some examples of Element Blend events are pool parties, lock-ins, retreats, trips, kickball games, etc. Blends are fun and crazy times when students can build relationships with one another and their leaders.
How do I get involved?
Ninth through twelfth grade students are welcome to attend a meeting or Blend whenever they would like. Element Blends are great for students who want to meet other students and leaders and just check things out. Sunday meetings are great for students who want to be part of the community, hear a challenging teaching, and take part in a Life Group.

Chaos/Element Cedar Point Trip - July 17, 2013

Hey Element!
We will be going to Cedar Point again this summer! We are going to do a day trip to the Roller Coaster capital of the World!
The cost is $60 for a ticket, transportation, and a lunch. Feel free to bring extra money for food at the park and on the way home.
We will be taking a bus, so the trip is limited to 40 spots. Turn in your forms and money ASAP to make sure you get a spot!

Hey Element!
Our summer ministry schedule will be slightly different than the school year. Here is what were doing this summer:
- The last Element of the year will be on Friday, May 17th. We are going to have a summer kick-off BBQ. Come out for great food and fun!
- The summer Element meetings will begin on June 12, 2013. We will be meeting every other Wednesday night instead of Sundays. Both Element and Chaos will be meeting on the same night, but staying separate for the Bible studies.
- The only times we are meeting together during the summer are posted on the schedule.

Hey Element!
We are doing a summer kick-off celebration to wrap up the school year. It is going to be on Friday, May 17 from 7-11 PM at Riverview. We are going to BBQ, play Wiffle ball, have fun with some Improv games, and have a bonfire.
This is a free event. Bring your friends for a great way to kick off the summer!
FYI - This will be the last Element of the school year. Summer Bible studies begin on June 12.

We are wrapping up our school year with a summer kick-off party on Friday, May 17 from 7:00 - 11:00 PM at Riverview!
We are going to grill out, play lawn games, test our acting skills in some "Whose Line is it Anyway?" games, and have a bonfire.

Wilderness Information Meeting - Sunday, March 24 at 7:30 PM

There will be a short informational meeting about the Wilderness Backpacking trip on Sunday, March 24 from 7:30-8:30 PM at Riverview in room 202. We will answer many common questions about the trip and will explain the goals of the trip as a whole.

Element Wilderness Backpacking Trip - July 20-27

We are taking a hiking trip to the San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado. It is both a physically and spiritually challenging trip for any high school student who is looking to try something new. It is an awesome trip!
Here are the details:
Dates: July 20-27
Cost: $850 (There will be work opportunities to earn money toward this trip. Students must be registered in order to participate in the work days)
How to sign-up: Turn in the registration form and $200 deposit. Please have money and registration in by April 1st to guarantee yourself a spot!
Element Summer Camp Trip - July 22-27

Cost:$499 (There will be work opportunities in the next couple of months to earn money. You must be signed up to participate in the work opportunities)
How to sign up: Turn in a registration form with $100 deposit to reserve a spot. Please have form and money in by April 1st to guarantee a spot!
Element Road Rally - Saturday, April 20

We are doing our 3rd annual Road Rally on Saturday, April 20 from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. It is going to be insane!
What is a Road Rally? It is a multi-city scavenger hunt where teams of 3-4 high school students and a leader/adult drive around figuring out puzzles and deciphering clues. It is unlike anything you have ever done!
The cost is $20 per team, and the forms needed can be found by clicking the links below. Please have forms and money in by April 14!

Element Discipleship Retreat - March 8-10

Hey Element!
On March 8-10, we will be going on our annual Element Discipleship Retreat! This weekend will be spent building relationships with other students from Element, while spending a lot of time in worship, studying the bible, and getting to know one another more deeply. We will still have a ton of fun with games and other crazy events (Octo-ball, zipline, volleyball, ping-pong, etc.) but the primary goal of the weekend is to learn how to grow in your faith on your own and while in community.
We are going to Camp Michawana in Hastings, MI.
The cost for the entire weekend is $95.
Please have all the forms and money in by March 3rd.

Element $5 Formal - Friday, February 15 from 8-11 PM

Hey Element!
We are doing a $5 formal at Riverview on Friday, February 15 from 8-11 PM. It is going to be a blast!
The event is free to attend, however, we would like everyone to dress up in some old clothes from home or something purchased at a thrift store for around $5. This event is going to be an awesome time of goofy old suits and dresses, dancing, and time with friends!
There is no forms needed for this event. Just show up in your best $5 duds!

Element Laser Tag - January 18

Hey high school students! Mobile Laser Kombat is coming back!
We are having an all-out indoor Laser Tag battle at Riverview! It is going to be insane!
The event is on Friday, January 18 from 8:00 - 11:00 PM at Riverview. We will be playing in the Auditorium.
The cost is $10 if you turn in your form and money before January 18th, or $15 on the day of the event. For that you get THREE hours of Laser tag, pizza and pop!

Tech Volunteers Needed

Each volunteer will be responsible for one Sunday evening a month during school year (from 4:30-7:00 pm) and training will be provided. No experience is necessary. Element Lock-in 2012 - October 20th

We have rented out the ENTIRE YMCA for our Element Lock-in! There will be swimming, basketball, racquetball, volleyball, wallyball, video games, Octoball, photobooth, cards, games and more!
The Lock in will be on Saturday, October 20th from 10:00 PM - 7:00 AM.
The price for this event is $15.
For every 40 students that come, we are giving away a free retreat! That's worth $125!
The more friends you bring, the greater chance you will have to win a free retreat!
Turn in the forms below to your Element leader with your $15! To best prepare for this event, please have forms in by October 14.
Element - Saturday Night Service and Bonfire - September 22

Hey Element! We are having a bonfire after the Saturday night service on September 22nd! The bonfire will be at Riverview on the soccer field. Come ready for a great time and bring some friends!
We will meet in the Auditorium lobby for the service at 7:00ish, and then go outside afterward for the bonfire.
If you can't make it to the service, feel free to meet us in the auditorium lobby at 8:30 and join us for the bonfire. The event goes until 11:00 PM. Hope to see you there!

We are going to Cedar Point! On Thursday, July 26th, we are going to leave from Riverview and spend the day riding roller coasters! Here are the details:
Times: We will leave from Riverview at 6:30 AM, and will return at 11:30 PM at the latest.
Price: $60 covers admission into the park, transportation, and a packed lunch. You can bring your own lunch or bring extra money to use inside the park!
Who: Students from Element and parent chaperones. If you have a parent who wants to go enjoy the trip with us, let us know on the registration form below!
What to Bring: Comfortable shoes, swimsuit and towel(optional for water rides), money for locker/food, backpack, wristwatch

We are going to a Lansing Lugnuts game! On Thursday, July 12th, we will be leaving from Riverview at 6:00 PM to go watch the Lansing Lugnuts take on the Quad City River Bandits! Be sure to bring a filled out form and $12 to Element by July 5th to be guaranteed a ticket.

UPDATE - 6/29/12 - There is currently a "Burn Ban" in the Lansing area due to the dry weather, so we will not be having a bonfire tomorrow night. We will still be attending the service and hanging out afterward. Hope to see you there!

Instead of meeting on Thursday this week, we will be attending the Saturday night service together and having a bonfire afterward. All of the students and leaders will meet in the auditorium lobby and have a bonfire at Riverview after the service ends. The bonfire will go until 11:00 PM.

Hey Element! We are doing an Amazing Race multi-city scavenger hunt! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST EVENTS OF THE YEAR! The more teams enter, the bigger the cash prizes!
Teams of 3 or 4 high school students with an Element leader/adult driver will drive around solving clues as a team. The team that gets to the finish line first will win!

Wanna spend an entire night hanging out with your friends at the YMCA? Then get pumped!
The entire Oak Park YMCA has been rented out and we have been given full access! Swimming Pool, basketball, soccer, racquetball, volleyball, wallyball, movies, video games, cards, dodgeball, music and much more!
The event takes place at the Oak Park YMCA, 900 Long Blvd., Lansing MI 48911 and goes from 9:00 PM - 8:00 AM.
Wear comfortable clothes, sleeping bag, pillow, a swimsuit and a towel.
The cost is $15, and it covers use of the entire YMCA, food, drinks, and chances to win amazing prizes!
The more friends you bring, the better your chances to win great prizes!
For every 40 students that come, we are giving away a free retreat!

Element Give 20 - Restore Church

Hey Element! For the month of August, we are attempting to raise $1000 for Restore Church and their efforts to reach students in inner-city Detroit. The "Give 20" initiative is asking every student and leader involved in the Element ministry to give $20. This can be money you have earned, money you have saved, or possibly even doing your own neighborhood bottle drive. This initiative is also great for sharing why we are raising money with other people not involved with Chaos, such as a sibling, parent, or friend. If everyone in Element participated, and got one other person to participate as well, we would raise well over our goal of $1000. Once you "give 20" you will be sent a facebook banner that you can put on your page to show that you gave. THIS IS AN AWESOME OPPORTUNITY! Element Bottle Drive - Sunday July 17th

Hey high schoolers! On Sunday, July 17th, we are going to meet at Riverview and do a neighborhood bottle drive! We are going to meet at the Riverview Chapel at 1:00 and send out teams to different neighborhoods to collect bottles and cans for Restore Church. Element leaders will be leading the teams in the different areas. The bottle drive will end back at Riverview at 4:00 PM. Hope to see you there!

Hey high schoolers! We are going to Cedar Point on Tuesday, July 26th! It is going to be an awesome day of roller coasters and fun with friends. Can/Bottle Drive for Restore Church

This summer with the Element Ministry, we are going to be collecting bottles and cans to raise money for Restore Church in Detroit. Our goal is to raise $3000 to help support Restore Church's effort to reach the children of Detroit by starting sport's leagues. The money we raise will go directly to buying sports equipment, jerseys, food, and other needed supplies. Element Camping Trip - June 17th

As a celebration of school ending and summer beginning, we are going on a camping trip! We are going to spend time in the great outdoors playing games, eating delicious food, enjoying a bonfire and much more!
We will be leaving from Riverview on Friday, June 17th at 6:30 PM, and will be arriving back at Riverview on Saturday, June 18th at 11:00 AM. There is no cost to this event, however, you need to bring your own camping supplies (tent, sleeping bag, etc.)

May Element Blend - Road Rally!

The Element is having a Road Rally! We are going to have an Amazing Race style event in which teams of 3 students and an adult driver drive around the Holt and Lansing area finding clues, solving tough puzzles and trying to beat other teams! This event costs $5 per person ($20 per team) and requires you to turn in a registration form and a consent form, which are located below. The registration forms are due by May 7th, and can be turned in at Element or to Riverview any time throughout the week. This event is going to be a blast!

Element Discipleship Retreat - April 15-16

The Element (High school) ministry at Riv is going on a discipleship retreat! The weekend will be focused on growing in your faith independently as well as in community. The weekend will be full of challenging teaching and time with friends. It is going to be an amazing time!
When: April 15-16 (Forms need to be in by April 1st)
Where: Wesley Woods Camp in Dowling, MI

Student Ministry Parent Committee Meeting - 3/15/11

If you are interested in serving on a parent committee for the Student Ministries (Chaos and Element) at Riverview, there will be a meeting on Tuesday, March 15 from 7:00 - 8:30 PM in room 202. This group would be comprised of parents willing to meet quarterly during the year to spend time in prayer, get to know the leaders, offer insights into the ministry, and provide resources (snacks, transportation, hosting an event, etc.) Please RSVP to Tony Pyle at Tony.Pyle@RivChurch.com.
March Element Blend - Element March Madness

Get ready for the Madness! The Element (High School) ministry will be having a March Madness event on Friday, March 18 from 7:00 - 10:00 PM. This won't be your typical March Madness. Students are going to be competing in different events in hopes to becoming the Element March Madness 2011 champion! The night will include crazy time with friends, food, and insane competition! February Element Blend - Lock-in!

The Element Blend for February is an All-Night Lock-in! The Element ministry will be getting together on Friday, February 18 at 9:00 PM and will be watching movies, hanging out with friends, playing crazy games, eating great food, and winning awesome prizes until 7:00 AM on Saturday morning! For every new person a high schooler brings, their chances of winning the prizes are greatly increased. You don’t want to miss out on this awesome event! P.S. - If you choose to come to this event, you will need to stay until 7:00 AM on Saturday morning. We want to insure the safety of everyone coming, and do not want any high school students driving anywhere late at night. Thanks!

Tony Pyle, the Student Ministries Director, will explain the vision of the ministry, what happens at weekly Chaos and Element meetings, and what is happening in the future with the student ministries at Riverview. What is the Element?

The Element is a ministry at Riverview specifically designed for high school students. At Element, we spend time having fun, singing worship songs, socializing with our friends, being challenged by God's word, and sharing our lives together in Life-groups. The Element meets every Sunday from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. We hope you join us!
Element Broomball tournament!

We are going to have an intense broomball tournament with the Element! We will be playing broomball on Saturday, January 15 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. We will be playing at 673 Waverly Road in Dimondale. Click here for a map from Riverview. If you need a ride, we will be carpooling from Riverview at 12:30. Channel your inner "Mighty Duck" and come out for an awesome tournament! All you need is warm clothes. We will have the brooms, food, and playing arena. The teams will be 6 on 6, so start thinking up some strategy! Hope to see you all there! Element Corny Christmas Sweater Party - December 12

On Sunday, December 12, we are going to have an Element Corny Christmas Sweater Party! The party will be from 4:00 - 6:00 PM in the Chapel at Riverview. The student who has the corniest, most amazing Christmas sweater will win a Celebration Cinema prize valued at $50! This will be our last Element meeting until January 9th, so be sure to bring your friends! Come out for a night of amazing Christmas goodies, fun times with friends, and some great Christmas sweaters. We hope to see you there!
Element Shopping Spree Service Opportunity - December 12

On Sunday, December 12 at 1:00, leaders and students from the Element ministry are partnering with the Compassion ministry at Riverview and are going on a shopping spree! Leaders and students are going to buy gifts for students in the Foster Park Program at Barefoot Church in Lansing. Students will be given money to buy gifts for students in need. Afterwards, students and leaders will bring the gifts back to Riverview to be wrapped. If you are a part of the Element ministry, this is a great way to serve along with others in the community.
If you would like to be a part of this, students and leaders will be meeting in the Chapel at Riverview at 1:00 and will leave for the shopping shortly after that. November Element Blend: Fall Retreat 2010!

For our November Element Blend, we will be going on a Fall Retreat! This weekend is guaranteed to be a fun and crazy time of building friendships, playing crazy games and learning about Jesus.
When is it? November 12-14
Who is going? Leaders and students from the Element, along with other high school students form East Lansing, Mason, Williamston, and Eaton Rapids.
How much does it cost? For all the transportation, food and lodging, the total cost for the weekend is $125.
Why go? It is going to be a great time of fellowship with one another, along with being challenged in your faith. You don't want to miss this!

We have changed the date for our October Element Blend. We were initially going to play outdoor laser tag on Saturday, October 2nd from 3-5 PM at Riverview. We have changed the date to October 16th from 3-5 PM at Riverview. Everything about the Blend will be the same as it was before, just on a different day. Thanks!

ATTENTION: WE CHANGED THE DATE! What do you get when you combine an outdoor inflatable arena, laser tag, and crazy high school students? MOBILE LASER KOMBAT! We are going to be playing outdoor laser tag at Riverview on Saturday, October 16th from 3:00 - 5:00 PM. The cost is $10 per student for two hours of epic laser tag battles! The Element Blend for August is going to be a Lawn Game/Bonfire night! We will spend the evening playing different lawn games (Cornhole, ladder golf, washers, etc.) and we’ll end the night with a bonfire.
