Behind the Music at Riverview Church
Indie rock. Acoustic sets. Heavy rock. Blues. 90’s rock. Jazz. Rootsy rock. Folk. These are just some of the styles of music you may experience during a weekend service at Riverview.
Riv believes that we as people can worship God through singing in diverse ways that cross style boundaries. If we can praise God with a banjo, well . . . why not do it? We choose our songs carefully, making sure the lyrics are theologically correct.
We believe that the charge in Psalms to “sing a new song” applies to us today as well as well as to the original audience. You can’t sing a new song unless you have someone writing new songs, so we encourage all our bands to spend some of their practice time writing songs together. We want the music at Riverview to be excellent, accessible, and artistic. Sometimes there will be tension between those three, but we're OK with that.
We know music can be an emotional thing, but we try not to be manipulative in the way we do music at Riv. We believe we as a congregation have a responsibility to respond to God’s initiation in our lives. Throughout the week we're spread out living our separate lives, and hopefully worshipping God with the way we live. Weekend services provide an opportunity to respond in thanks to God as a church — to be real and passionate and sing about the deepest truths we know, worshiping God because of who He is.
Riverview holds periodic auditions for musicians, so look for announcements regarding those if you are interested in being part of the music at Riv.
