Faith(ful) Now, Accepted Later

Justin Detmers

Matthew 25:14-43

Do you have the presence of faith in your life? Do you believe in the sacrifice Jesus has made for you? Pastor Justin Detmers shares the parable of the talents, reminding us that only Jesus has perfect faithfulness, He is the only perfect One. Jesus’ faithfulness opens the door to our relationship with God, and our ability to live a life of increasing faithfulness.

There’s a man goin’ ‘roun takin’ names
And he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won’t be treated all the same
There’ll be a golden ladder reachin’ down
When the man comes around
The hairs on your arm will stand up
At the terror in each sip and in each sup
Will you partake of that last offered cup
Or disappear into the potter’s ground?
When the man comes around

Johnny Cash (When The Man Comes Around)

“Therefore be alert, because you don’t know either the day or the hour.
Matthew 25:13

You are a steward; if you’re faithful now, you’ll be accepted later.

“For it is just like a man about to go on a journey. He called his own servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
Matthew 25:14

To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent, depending on each one’s ability. Then he went on a journey.
Matthew 25:15

Immediately the man who had received five talents went, put them to work, and earned five more. In the same way the man with two earned two more. But the man who had received one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
Matthew 25:16-18

Regarding the master’s assets, are you industrious or idle?

“After a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
Matthew 25:19

The man who had received five talents approached, presented five more talents, and said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I’ve earned five more talents.’ “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.’
Matthew 25:20-211

Now without faith it is impossible to please God,
Hebrews 11:6

“The man with two talents also approached. He said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. See, I’ve earned two more talents.’ “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.’
Matthew 25:22-23

Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other answered, rebuking him: “Don’t you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment? We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Luke 23:39-42

“The man who had received one talent also approached and said, ‘Master, I know you. You’re a harsh man, reaping where you haven’t sown and gathering where you haven’t scattered seed. So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’
Matthew 25:24-25

“His master replied to him, ‘You evil, lazy servant! If you knew that I reap where I haven’t sown and gather where I haven’t scattered, then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and I would have received my money back with interest when I returned.
Matthew 25:26-27

“So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents. For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have more than enough. But from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him And throw this good-for-nothing servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:28-30

When the man comes around…

– The faithful will be praised, promoted, & invited in.

 – The faithless will be criticized, condemned, & rejected.
