When John wrote this account of Jesus, he was very intentional about contextualizing the narrative to a Greek audience. Their culture was saturated with gods and John used metaphors they already knew to help explain who Jesus is and why His claims were so bold. Since we’re living in a 21st-century western culture, we set out to explain some of these cultural metaphors and norms.
