  • Read Galatians 3:23-28.  Have you felt excluded from the church?  Have you been tempted to exclude others?  Why?  How does the truth of the Scripture help shape your perspective?
  • What legacy would you like to leave behind, for your children or for others who follow in your footsteps?

    • How do you typically respond to feeling or being shamed about your Christian faith? That is, do you tend to respond in anger, fearful withdrawal, conformity, or bold courage?
    • Read 2 Timothy 1:8-10 and Romans 1:16a. Why is Paul NOT ashamed of the Gospel?
    • Read 2 Timothy 1:7 and Proverbs 28:1. Consider the sort of dispositions Christians are to have in light of how God has equipped them. How do you think God wants you to respond to your fears and feelings of shame?

  • Do you currently have a person (or people) in your life that you are intentionally helping grow in their faith so they can in turn help others do the same? If not, how can you move toward that goal? Is there someone you can begin praying for right now?

  • Many that Paul knew in ministry “departed from the truth”. What causes people to do this? What draws people away from the Gospel? How do we stand firm and remain in the truth?
  • Created things often want our full-life commitment. How do we keep good things that God has given us from becoming ultimate things that we worship?
  • “The entire Christian life is one of endurance”. Where do you need to endure in your faith right now? Take time to share with one another and pray together as a life group.

    • Who is in ‘your circle’; do you have community of devoted Christians who spur you on? What steps can you take to have a strong and healthy biblical community for yourself and others close to you?
    • Read 2 Timothy 2:24-25. When facing opposition do you typically avoid conflict, quarrel, or try to gently instruct?
    • Considering 2 Timothy 2:25-26. Who do you know that is perhaps ‘trapped and taken captive’ in their thinking? How could you specifically be praying for them?

      • What are some common false gospels that are taught within the Church (universal) today? How does that contrast with the Gospel message that Jesus lived a perfect life, was crucified for the sins of the world, and buried, but resurrected from the grave, conquering sin, satan, and death?
      • In 2 Timothy 2:21, Paul writes that anyone who purifies themselves from a false gospel will be set apart, useful to the Master, and prepared for every good work. What does these three expressions mean? Also, specifically what are some of these “good works” that you foresee doing in your life?
      • Paul instructs Timothy to be gentle, patient, and able to teach/instruct those who continue to teach an incorrect gospel and embrace quarreling. Out of these three abilities, which one do you find the most difficult to do? Why do you think these three things are needed to correct someone who enjoys to quarrel?
      • Take some time to pray with your Life Group for Riv, that we would be a church that keeps the accurate and explicit message of the Gospel at the forefront of all we do.

  • Who are some people you’re praying for to come to repentance between now and Jesus’ return? Take some time to pray together as a group for God to draw these people to Himself.

  • The Bible is not like any other book. It is the Word inspired by God containing the wisdom for salvation and makes the person complete and equipped for a life of faith.

    • This passage assumes that its reader Timothy is on a mission and in that mission hardship is coming. Do you see yourself as on a mission in life? Is that mission instructed by scripture?
    • Re-read verses 16-17 of 2 Tim 3, think personally for a moment, are you interacting with the Bible like this is true? Share if you feel comfortable how this is a struggle for you. Point each other to how the Gospel helps our unbelief.

  • Read II Timothy 4:18. Do you possess the same confidence in your eternal future that Paul has in his? Consider the reality that, as followers of Jesus, when we die it’s not “goodbye forever,” but rather “we’ll see each other again very soon, and for eternity.”
  • How has II Timothy impacted you overall? How have you been encouraged, convicted, or motivated by Paul’s exhortations to his young disciple Timothy?
