The Ultimate High Priest

Justin Detmers

Hebrews 7:18-28

Jesus is the final and eternal High Priest; He has permanently and perfectly saved His people. Are there times when His position feels like a standard set too high? Pastor Justin Detmers reminds us that although sin is within all of us, we can have confidence and hope in Jesus. It is through His sacrifice that our sins are forgiven and we are seen as faultless by God.

Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 2:17

Jesus is the final and eternal high priest. As the ultimate priest and perfect sacrifice, Jesus permanently and perfectly saves His people. For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
Hebrews 5:1

And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, self-indulgence, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a person.”
Mark 7:20-23

Now if perfection came through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the law), what further need was there for another priest to appear, said to be according to the order of Melchizedek and not according to the order of Aaron?
Hebrews 7:11

Every priest stands day after day ministering and offering the same sacrifices time after time, which can never take away sins.
Hebrews 10:11

Now many have become Levitical priests, since they are prevented by death from remaining in office. But because he remains forever, he holds his priesthood permanently. Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.
Hebrews 7:23-25

Jesus is the ultimate high priest because:
1. He offers eternal intercession.
2. He offers complete holiness.

For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He doesn’t need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do—first for their own sins, then for those of the people. He did this once for all time when he offered himself.

Hebrews 7:26-27

3. He offers Himself.

Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.
Hebrews 7:25

For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak, but the promise of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son, who has been perfected forever.
Hebrews 7:28

Christ dealt with man’s triple problem of sin, death, and the devil. We are saved. But it is not simply a question of our spiritual past. Salvation in this letter is also a present, immediate, and constantly renewed experience.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus— he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh)— and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.
Hebrews 10:19-22

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
