Don’t Trust Your Heart

Feelings are God given, they make us human. They give us the ability to express sorrow, joy, pain, comfort, anger, and on and on. They help filter out information that comes our way. We respond to situations with different sets of feelings. Feelings are part of who God made us. But they aren’t always right, they aren’t always true, and they aren’t always so helpful.

Jeremiah 17:9 says “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

When we trust ourselves, our feelings, our heart, without the filter of God’s Word, we are open to deception. When our feelings become the only grid for our situation, we can be tricked into believing a warped truth.

In the same passage, a few verses earlier, Jeremiah says

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

Believing what is true instead of what we feel is maybe the greatest work of a believer. But that “work of belief” anchors us and allows us to live in the trust of the One who sees perfectly.
