Reclothed in the Courtroom

Justin Detmers

Zechariah

Scripture claims that we are all born guilty. How can we live and have hope in light of that? Pastor Justin Detmers shares that we all stand trial before God, the just judge, dressed in our sin and condemnation. The good news is that Jesus uniquely provides the only solution to our problem and defends us as “not guilty,” reclothing us in righteousness.

Then he showed me the high priest Joshua standing before the angel of the Lord, with Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan: “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! May the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Isn’t this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”
Now Joshua was dressed with filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.

Zechariah 3:1-3 CSB

The Judge – The Lord/The angel of the Lord

Defendant – Joshua (high priest) and his colleagues

Prosecutor – Satan

Now Joshua was dressed with filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.

Zechariah 3:3 CSB

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Hebrews 4:13 NIV

Then he showed me the high priest Joshua standing before the angel of the Lord, with Satan standing at his right side to accuse him.

So the angel of the Lord spoke to those standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes!” Then he said to him, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with festive robes.”

Then I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So a clean turban was placed on his head, and they clothed him in garments while the angel of the Lord was standing nearby.

The Lord said to Satan: “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! May the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Isn’t this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”

Zechariah 3:2 CSB

Now Joshua was dressed with filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.

Zechariah 3:3-5 CSB

He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21 CSB

“Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your colleagues sitting before you; indeed, these men are a sign that I am about to bring my servant, the Branch. Notice the stone I have set before Joshua; on that one stone are seven eyes. I will engrave an inscription on it”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies—“and I will take away the iniquity of this land in a single day.

Zechariah 3:8-9 CSB

I will take away the iniquity of this land in a single day. On that day, each of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and fig tree.” This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.

Zechariah 3:9-10 CSB

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

Romans 8:31-34

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

In Jesus, the verdict is “not guilty”; we are reclothed in righteousness.
