Work

Kyle McMahon

Genesis 1-3

Have you ever thought of how your work and Jesus come together? Not in the sense of working for salvation, but your day-to-day job of being a teacher, cashier, cook, etc., surprisingly all ties together with Jesus. Kyle McMahon goes through the Creation account and shares how God intends our work to point to His glory and to Jesus Christ.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth…” And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth…” And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.

Genesis 1:26-31

And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food… The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

Genesis 2:8-15

Since our being created in God’s image leads directly to our privilege and duty to subdue the earth, I take it that human vocation involves exercising a subordinate lordship over creation by which we shape and control it for good purposes. When God sends us forth to work in His image, to be sure, our ditches are dug straight, our pipefittings are not to leak, our surgical incisions clean because God is a God of order and beauty and competence. Therefore, the essence of our work as humans must be that it is done in conscious reliance on God’s power, as a conscious quest of God’s pattern of excellence, and in deliberate pursuit of God’s glory.

John Piper

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10

Our work glorifies God.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

Work glorifies God because we seek to please Him first and foremost.

Don’t work only while being watched, as people-pleasers, but work wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people.

Colossians 3:22 CSB

The works of monks and priests, however holy and arduous they may be, do not differ on whit in the sight of God from the works of the rustic laborer in the field or the woman going about her household tasks… all works are measured before God by faith alone.

Martin Luther

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31 CSB

Be faithful in the work you have, not the work you want.

‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant!’

Matthew 25:24-26

‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’

Acts 13:22

Our work does not determine our identity: our identity reflects our work.

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:20

But our citizenship is in heaven.

Philippians 3:20

…members of God’s household.

Ephesians 2:19 CSB

For the love of Christ compels us, since we have reached this conclusion: If one died for all, then all died. And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the one who died for them and was raised. From now on, then, we do not know anyone from a worldly perspective… Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come! Everything is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and he has committed the message of reconciliation to us.

2 Corinthians 9:13-19 CSB

We are deeply and unconditionally loved.

We are a new creation.

We are reconciled to our Heavenly Father.

We have purpose.

The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy. I came that you would have life and have it abundantly.
