Body Matters
While scripture focuses on the status of our soul, we are physical beings as well as spiritual beings, and scripture does not neglect the body. Our body is a gift from God, and in all we do, we should glorify Him. It is easy to slip into the familiar comforts of food and drink when our problems seem to overwhelm us, but there is the danger of making them idols instead of Jesus. Pastor Tyler St. Clair teaches about the importance of health in the Christian life in sermon four of the series “Therefore”.

It is a gift from God
For it was you who created my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.
Your works are wondrous,
and I know this very well.
My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in your book and planned
before a single one of them began.
It glorifies God
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
It is a matter of obedience
Don’t associate with those who drink too much wine
or with those who gorge themselves on meat.
For the drunkard and the glutton will become poor,
and grogginess will clothe them in rags.
How long will you stay in bed, you slacker?
When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the arms to rest,
and your poverty will come like a robber,
your need, like a bandit.
It is wise
I lie down and sleep;
I wake again because the Lord sustains me.
I will not be afraid of thousands of people
who have taken their stand against me on every side.
You have put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and new wine abound.
I will both lie down and sleep in peace,
for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety.
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
