Mark Brett

We know that our body is a temple for the Holy Spirit. How do we honor God with our bodies? This week, Pastor Mark Brett reminds us that our overall physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual well being is rooted in the Gospel.

Health: Overall well-being. A state of spiritual, mental, emotional, physical and relational well-being.

For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

1 Timothy 4:8

First Step To Health: Think Right

My son, pay attention to my words; listen closely to my sayings. Don’t lose sight of them; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them and health to one’s body. Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.

Proverbs 4:20-23

You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.

Isaiah 26:3

Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things.

Philippians 4:8 CSB

Second Step To Health: Develop Self-Control

Enkrates: To control impulses, show restraint

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.

Proverbs 25:28 NIV

Patience is better than power, and controlling one’s emotions, than capturing a city.

Proverbs 16:32 CSB

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Galatians 5:22-23 CSB

True self-control is a gift from above, produced in and through us by the Holy Spirit. Until we own that it is received from outside ourselves, rather than whipped up from within the effort we give to control ourselves will redound to our praise, rather than God’s.

John Piper

An overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, self-controlled,

1 Timothy 3:2 CSB

Third Step To Health: Live In Community

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Proverbs 27:17 NIV

Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up. Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm? And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 CSB

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

Proverbs 13:20

Steps To Health:

1. Think Right

2. Develop Self-Control

3. Live In Community

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:1-2 CSB

Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

1 Corinthians 6:18

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Your body is a temple

You are not your own

For none of us lives for himself, and no one dies for himself. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

Romans 14:7-8 CSB

You were bought with a price

What you are called to do always flows from what Jesus has already done.

Noel Jesse Heikkinen

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31
