Faithful Promises Fulfilled

Justin Detmers

Joshua 21-22

We make promises every day, to our family, our boss, our friends, even to ourselves, and if we’re honest we know that sometimes they fall through. Do you struggle to trust in the promises that God has made to you and live in response to His goodness? Pastor Justin Detmers reminds us that God’s promise-keeping is based on His goodness, not ours. Whatever pain and disappointment you might be facing right now, you can find rest in Jesus and His promise that never fails.

“Moses my servant is dead. Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan to the land I am giving the Israelites. I have given you every place where the sole of your foot treads, just as I promised Moses. No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or abandon you.”
Joshua 1:2-3, 5

So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side according to all he had sworn to their ancestors. None of their enemies were able to stand against them, for the Lord handed over all their enemies to them. None of the good promises the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed. Everything was fulfilled.
Joshua 21:43-45

God blesses and uses people who believe His promises

You know, then, that those who have faith, these are Abraham’s sons. Now the Scripture saw in advance that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and proclaimed the gospel ahead of time to Abraham, saying, All the nations will be blessed through you. Consequently, those who have faith are blessed with Abraham, who had faith.
Galatians 3:7-9

You are not going to take possession of their land because of your righteousness or your integrity. Instead, the Lord your God will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness, in order to fulfill the promise he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Deuteronomy 9:5

Understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.
Deuteronomy 9:6

God's promise-keeping is based on His goodnesses, not ours.

Only carefully obey the command and instruction that Moses the Lord’s servant gave you: to love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, keep his commands, be loyal to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.” Joshua blessed them and sent them on their way, and they went to their homes.
Joshua 22:5-6

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
Hebrews 4:8

We're not changed by the promises we make to God; we're changed by believing the promises God makes to us.
- Craig Groeschel

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33, NIV

Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”
Romans 12:19, BSB

For every one of God’s promises is “Yes” in him [Christ].
2 Corinthians 1:20

Truly I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.
John 5:29

We are blessed to be a blessing to the World.
