Gospel Assurance and Faithful Obedience

Tony Pyle

Joshua 5-6

With so many unknowns in our lives, we can find ourselves feeling anxious as we attempt to rely on our own abilities or seek immediate assurance. Are there situations in your life where you wish you could have certainty of the outcome, but don’t? Pastor Tony Pyle reminds us that our confidence in God’s Word is what leads us to faithful obedience in our lives as followers of Jesus. We can trust in Him because His Word is true, and He is faithful.

Now Jericho was strongly fortified because of the Israelites—no one leaving or entering.
Joshua 6:1

Before the men fell asleep, she went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and everyone who lives in the land is panicking because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings you completely destroyed across the Jordan. When we heard this, we lost heart, and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.
Joshua 2:8-11

March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry seven ram’s-horn trumpets in front of the ark. But on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the ram’s horns. When there is a prolonged blast of the horn and you hear its sound, have all the troops give a mighty shout. Then the city wall will collapse, and the troops will advance, each man straight ahead.”
Joshua 6:3-5

The Lord said to Joshua, “Look, I have handed Jericho, its king, and its best soldiers over to you.”
Joshua 6:2

Faithful obedience is fueled by the assurance of God's Word.

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after being marched around by the Israelites for seven days.
Hebrews 11:30

God accomplishes His will in this world through the obedient faith of broken and sinful people.

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20
