I Believe In The Holy Spirit

Tony Pyle

John 14-16

Our selfish desires and actions are a natural outflow of our hearts without the Spirit of God. Do you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life and heart? Pastor Tony Pyle reminds us that as we continue to live our lives for Christ, the Holy Spirit guides us to look more like Jesus. Instead of living in the flesh, we are called to live by the fruit of the Spirit.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of the saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

John 13:1

If you love me, you will keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.

John 14:15-17

I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.

John 14:25-26

When the Counselor comes, the one I will send to you from the Father— the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father — he will testify about me. You also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

John 15:26-27

Where you find the Spirit of God present, you do not find so much testimony about the Holy Spirit as you find testimony about Christ. Where you find, therefore, a bold, biblical, urgent, accurate, enthusiastic, joyful and life-changing testimony of Christ, you can rest assured that the Holy Spirit is vibrantly at work.

– Al Mohler

Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: About sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

John 16:7-11

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

John 16:13-14

I say, then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things — as I warned you before — that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Galatians 5:16-26

What comes into your mind when you think about the Holy Spirit?

What aspect of the Holy Spirit’s ministry encourages you the most (Abiding, Teaching, Testifying, Conviction of sin, Guiding)? Why?

Think back to your early life as a follower of Jesus. Are you seeing fruit of the spirit grow since that time of your life? Where specifically?

What does it mean for you to walk in the spirit (Galatians 5:16). How can your life group help you do that? Take time to pray for one another and share how you can help one another “walk by the Spirit” and not “carry out the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).
