Maintain A Loving Coexistence

Justin Detmers

Romans 14:13-23

Read Romans 14:13. In what ways have you noticed people –both inside and outside the church– judging, fighting/quarreling, and tripping others up over debated issues?

Still being mindful of Romans 14:13 (and considering verses 14 & 15), when have you seen positive examples of mature Christians opting to defer, submit to, or otherwise show grace to people who were easily offended or insecure in their faith?

Since Paul seems to indicate that some people are weak, some are strong, and others are arrogant (feel free to consult Romans 14:14b-15, Titus 3:10 & 1 Thessalonians 5:13b-14), how should we engage these different types of people? What adjustments might you need to make to operate according to scripture’s principles in this regard?

Read Romans 14:19-20 and consider what it might look like to practically promote peace and build others up. Who specifically in your life could use encouragement, additional grace, or gentle instruction? Consider where you might need to let negativity go and instead spur people on.

Read Philippians 2:3-8. How does Jesus provide not just the ultimate example of how to interact with people, but how does He empower us to live in God-honoring ways?
