Serve The One Who Frees You

Justin Detmers

Romans 6:15-23

No matter who we are or what stage of life we’re in, we all serve someone or something. Who is the ultimate master of your life? Pastor Justin Detmers reminds us we can choose what master we want to serve: sin that leads to bondage, or Jesus who leads to freedom. In Christ we are a new people who have received a new heart and as such we can stop trusting in ourselves to be good enough and put our trust in the One who gives His life graciously for others.

You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a string of pearls
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

- Bob Dylan

What then? Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not!
Romans 6:15

Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey—either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness?
Romans 6:16

How can we (actually) change?
1. We realize our (old) spiritual selves

But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching to which you were handed over, and having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.
Romans 6:17-18

I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh.
Romans 6:19

How can we (actually) change?
1. We realize our (old) spiritual selves
2. Appreciate our new spiritual new Master (who has set us free)

I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification.
Romans 6:19

Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
John 8:34-36

For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.
Romans 6:19-20

So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? The outcome of those things is death. But now, since you have been set free from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification—and the outcome is eternal life! For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:21-23

How can we (actually) change?
1. We realize our (old) spiritual selves
2. Appreciate our new spiritual new Master (who has set us free)
3. Receive the gift of eternal life

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-4
